Typically rather quiet so early in the season but a Mistle Thrush <span style="color: #01ffff;">duetrost </span>hung around all morning - it was as usual for this species very flighty.</p><p>A decent influx of Blackbirds <span style="color: #01ffff;">svarttrost </span>with an absolute minimum of 12 seen, 10 Starling <span style="color: #01ffff;">stær </span>and a flyover Skylark <span style="color: #01ffff;">sanglerke </span>were the rest of the migrants. Several Wren <span style="color: #01ffff;">gjerdesmett </span>and a few Robin <span style="color: #01ffff;">rødstrupe </span>may have been overwintering brds. Otherwise just the usual suspects - a handfull of White-tailed Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn</span>, a few Black Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">teist </span>and small numbers of the usual seaduck. A Magpie <span style="color: #01ffff;">skjære </span>also turned up - not a bird that is always present on the island.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMCdV3bTslclHCxorgJKGwbOQNOJpYyoXwfA4R0_bAecl45aa3m79w4K5bh38YZrZdCAvMObj3mu7vtZgoQq6F7NjKLBvhANsaysyScCnXOjZsEC4YDQDdaPgIn_50Xe9KTaMWmqzQuzSgK6-eMDkN9WRz89dbIEiXGlNeJiYx_RKMlyqc47hT8A/s660/Blackbird_DSC09398_e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; At Herdlevær 20+ Starling <span style="color: #01ffff;">stær </span>were the first new arrivals of the year - there have been fewer around this winter and this is the biggest flock thus far. Also a few Skylark <span style="color: #01ffff;">sanglerke </span>flying over and a Red-throated Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom </span>on the sea.</p><p>A Goshawk <span style="color: #01ffff;">hønsehauk </span>put in an appearance at Tjeldstø where a few Bullfinch <span style="color: #01ffff;">dompap </span>were the first I'd seen there this year and Greylag <span style="color: #01ffff;">grågås </span>numbers now obviously increasing. </p><p>A Wren <span style="color: #01ffff;">gjerdesmett </span>in my garden was the first I've seen for some time - great to know the winter didn't kill them all off:)</p><p>At Hatten a couple of Brambling <span style="color: #04ff00;">bjørkefink </span>were the first I've seen this year but have probably been around for quite some time.</p><p>Finally a look at Sæle produced a Grey Seal <span style="color: #04ff00;">havert</span>, Great Northern Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">islom</span>, Black Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">teist</span>, a few Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>and the usual.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrnggzYhctduD7jU28-eAzIAvV9WqNnmsagW33HiYW6JkXnfwtAicDyzIQ_SCTeh94BIsqhycVIF2S0ZgBE3wrBFGfjNh7b_Ij3mbALyZ-66KVlYBvONBx0eUQCR_In9Fs26TzpgVTvr75V1Bwm30rkYbj2woDhUDyQZzcB5Qa8udPsqwgB3pdug/s660/Grey_Seal_DSC09213_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="465" data-original-width="660" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrnggzYhctduD7jU28-eAzIAvV9WqNnmsagW33HiYW6JkXnfwtAicDyzIQ_SCTeh94BIsqhycVIF2S0ZgBE3wrBFGfjNh7b_Ij3mbALyZ-66KVlYBvONBx0eUQCR_In9Fs26TzpgVTvr75V1Bwm30rkYbj2woDhUDyQZzcB5Qa8udPsqwgB3pdug/s320/Grey_Seal_DSC09213_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Grey Seal <span style="color: #01ffff;">havert </span>feeding at Sæle</div><br /><p><br /></p><p>The following day I took things easy checking Dåvøy and Breivik without anything much of interest. With no meetings I took the day off work and we headed out in a small boat. Conditions were promising down part of the west side of northern Øygarden and also down the east side. However, as we headed out to the west near Turøy there was some heavy residual swell and the wind started picking up strongly.<div><br /></div><div>So not much to report other than the best numbers of Purple Sandpipers <span style="color: #01ffff;">fjæreplytt </span>thus far this year with a flock of 75 on Gjøna, 12 at Herdlevær and 20 at Solberg. Several Guillemots <span style="color: #01ffff;">lomvi </span>on the sea, most seemed well but one dead one also observed. Several Common Gulls <span style="color: #01ffff;">fiskemåke </span>were seen - more have been overwintering out here this winter than usual.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgagCfg0wKNxrm187b-0MoBUdu9puUvOD9_4HnRrRFZoG50zUGXcGVFt1-CWT9CSE6yhG5iAYScrPUtJXuziPfeufr_lg19FFs4o3u-CHebdvQPJkAonh2_Gp2f2ODa9gmzqry_o0fbqw8QWF-a3B7JZBt3B08sK9zSp9tD0FtBUdg1Rt-KptJBxw/s660/Guillemot_W3A5260_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="488" data-original-width="660" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgagCfg0wKNxrm187b-0MoBUdu9puUvOD9_4HnRrRFZoG50zUGXcGVFt1-CWT9CSE6yhG5iAYScrPUtJXuziPfeufr_lg19FFs4o3u-CHebdvQPJkAonh2_Gp2f2ODa9gmzqry_o0fbqw8QWF-a3B7JZBt3B08sK9zSp9tD0FtBUdg1Rt-KptJBxw/s320/Guillemot_W3A5260_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">lomvi</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBU-xQjyeiob6dyPDGEwxrOvpG0_4qOuNrFJiLZRiuS2_TwNabdCo4ECLJQPbJ48jMcDr-vpv41Wj70f9QS3kk_DDNQxsq-6cBz0Mcjwn92kTJgp33L5l9DLq0UMVtOiID4zkCBq6kymdzNqiJFAtah1OJrd668k81wQ5EHJkCLtxL7Vy9eQLwhg/s660/Oystercatcher_W3A5182_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="473" data-original-width="660" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBU-xQjyeiob6dyPDGEwxrOvpG0_4qOuNrFJiLZRiuS2_TwNabdCo4ECLJQPbJ48jMcDr-vpv41Wj70f9QS3kk_DDNQxsq-6cBz0Mcjwn92kTJgp33L5l9DLq0UMVtOiID4zkCBq6kymdzNqiJFAtah1OJrd668k81wQ5EHJkCLtxL7Vy9eQLwhg/s320/Oystercatcher_W3A5182_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Oystercatcher <span style="color: #01ffff;">tjeld</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWLGpXhP8p3S7z__q4aCOBYeSbn5Pt4bH8ottIzrrki1LjOkRxMKTO2HSDXnZ4fxgeW3vPi5VYZZ9wH4JLfRsUINi50m8pfjhs-8Ow-pWdG4wfX_wjRcjCPIjvvNC48qtXbE9z1n6Rz00CS2UK-zu0pMkcQhjeed5Lm63w67p0aSp1vYJMusKkSg/s660/Purple_Sandpiper_W3A5190_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="470" data-original-width="660" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWLGpXhP8p3S7z__q4aCOBYeSbn5Pt4bH8ottIzrrki1LjOkRxMKTO2HSDXnZ4fxgeW3vPi5VYZZ9wH4JLfRsUINi50m8pfjhs-8Ow-pWdG4wfX_wjRcjCPIjvvNC48qtXbE9z1n6Rz00CS2UK-zu0pMkcQhjeed5Lm63w67p0aSp1vYJMusKkSg/s320/Purple_Sandpiper_W3A5190_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Part of a flock of Purple Sandpipers <span style="color: #01ffff;">fjæreplytt</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGdBQlaqfgdQOTE1HFkT4en23uonM-e1jUMTy_xKaZnlo7EWjXfoHhN2TassX11roWP9jSUV74FAwT7Yl7rkBF1o6WgPHyBMkYtQx_a7hSTgv85_X3ZFRHDuAol_8IyYtXY-WeY0HvB37CViFoFUz74ztOLGYPG8y1q7tObky8lC5bOQlkE4cD7g/s660/WT_Eagle_W3A5246_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="488" data-original-width="660" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGdBQlaqfgdQOTE1HFkT4en23uonM-e1jUMTy_xKaZnlo7EWjXfoHhN2TassX11roWP9jSUV74FAwT7Yl7rkBF1o6WgPHyBMkYtQx_a7hSTgv85_X3ZFRHDuAol_8IyYtXY-WeY0HvB37CViFoFUz74ztOLGYPG8y1q7tObky8lC5bOQlkE4cD7g/s320/WT_Eagle_W3A5246_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">One of several WT Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn </span>seen on 20.02</div><br /><div><br /></div><div>A Goshawk <span style="color: #04ff00;">hønsehauk </span>hunting crows and/or gulls near Rong was the first I've seen this year.</div><div><br /></div><div>The following day I did the land based SEAPOP counts but things were rather quiet, Solberg held very little with just a couple of Long-tailed Duck <span style="color: #01ffff;">havelle</span>, a Gannet <span style="color: #01ffff;">havsule </span>in addition to the usual Mergansers <span style="color: #01ffff;">siland</span>, Goldeneye <span style="color: #01ffff;">kvinand </span>etc.</div><div><br /></div><div>Hjelme Vest was also off form with just 35 Long-tailed Duck <span style="color: #01ffff;">havelle</span>, a Black Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">teist</span>, a few Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>and two Common Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartand </span>present. I stopped in at a site close to the shops where a colour ringed Moorehen <span style="color: #04ff00;">sivhøne </span>was present. This bird was rescued at Mongstad in late 2022 and after being cleaned up from oil it was ringed and released. Nice to see it doing well. A pair of Mute Swans <span style="color: #04ff00;">knoppsvane </span>tried to keep a few Whoopers sangsvane away at the same site.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvbjkmkN4ggzBec6ZGhcj-uOZK1ig-DWb4ri5h1O5Q3MnaCjF207svVetv3Lj-R2V0G7FVmUD3J7wqZ8E1Jb_HPI6r-PWtl9fg9_o32gIsjG0cJu9YsN1gCsoZ-5-qmuW1fD3nibTBH5S5FcLaKsZ2V8DqFbxprDbrKMvmJQY0g-vsgv6eCKRqYg/s660/Moorehen_DSC09062_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="471" data-original-width="660" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvbjkmkN4ggzBec6ZGhcj-uOZK1ig-DWb4ri5h1O5Q3MnaCjF207svVetv3Lj-R2V0G7FVmUD3J7wqZ8E1Jb_HPI6r-PWtl9fg9_o32gIsjG0cJu9YsN1gCsoZ-5-qmuW1fD3nibTBH5S5FcLaKsZ2V8DqFbxprDbrKMvmJQY0g-vsgv6eCKRqYg/s320/Moorehen_DSC09062_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The Moorehen <span style="color: #04ff00;">sivhøne </span>at Kårtveit. Did my usual round at Herdlevær which was rather quiet but a Red-throated Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom</span>, several White-tailed Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn </span>and a Curlew <span style="color: #01ffff;">storspove</span> meant it wasn't a waste of time. Spent the afternoon and evening fishing - only a pod of at least eight Porpoises <span style="color: #01ffff;">nise </span>of interest and the freezer is now FULL, Ling <span style="color: #01ffff;">lange</span>, Pollack <span style="color: #01ffff;">lyr</span>, Whiting <span style="color: #01ffff;">hvitting</span>, Dab <span style="color: #01ffff;">sandflyndre </span>and Grey Gunard <span style="color: #01ffff;">knurr </span>were the fish species caught, interestingly a school of something that looked like Mackrell <span style="color: #01ffff;">makrell </span>started patrolling the surface after dark.</p><p>Calm but rainy on Sunday so I popped in a several localities, hoping to find some early spring migrants. I failed in this but later in the afternoon a Mistle Thrush <span style="color: #04ff00;">duetrost </span>was reported from the very first place I checked earlier in the day. I made a short extra trip out and connected with it, although it was typically very flighty.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfiHnqTYeTOzejxWFb13xBQT1ujyxkK2Eg0fcHxTxV8wErJBleUyHnFRjRYMpqj13XknOGbh2_456lXYOS3_6hOy3zCprav7vK1O0QFlSZbkzMirXldJcweVL7uQJ3nIDip9At7DnuNP3Uvc1LGm9WJtEwZSsvcDgtZLVL400oig7tfLfTRFpyoQ/s660/Mistle_Thrush_DSC09027_E.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="466" data-original-width="660" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfiHnqTYeTOzejxWFb13xBQT1ujyxkK2Eg0fcHxTxV8wErJBleUyHnFRjRYMpqj13XknOGbh2_456lXYOS3_6hOy3zCprav7vK1O0QFlSZbkzMirXldJcweVL7uQJ3nIDip9At7DnuNP3Uvc1LGm9WJtEwZSsvcDgtZLVL400oig7tfLfTRFpyoQ/s320/Mistle_Thrush_DSC09027_E.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Mistle Thrush <span style="color: #04ff00;">duetrost </span>at Tjeldstø</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">First proper migrant of the year:)</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGQXij2JINgGupb3LAygwY5F2q_RiCLk9XIQgzpOqC2IHfECZ008XQFLUXdi9zwHnPUiuYS7j_mM5IF9knhMRX-nF4sWWvRuErocJG21mN1ZTmZKMraZU-JO3XdXlwWLEl8x1KLcutx8SYfgnRxGpnOwKcrajNlEzKkTWW34pW7dyQVN4jy9NuQ/s4080/20240217_090344.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4080" data-original-width="3060" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGQXij2JINgGupb3LAygwY5F2q_RiCLk9XIQgzpOqC2IHfECZ008XQFLUXdi9zwHnPUiuYS7j_mM5IF9knhMRX-nF4sWWvRuErocJG21mN1ZTmZKMraZU-JO3XdXlwWLEl8x1KLcutx8SYfgnRxGpnOwKcrajNlEzKkTWW34pW7dyQVN4jy9NuQ/s320/20240217_090344.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Snowdrops are now in flower many places, these are from my garden.</div><br /><p>A lone Starling <span style="color: #01ffff;">stær </span>at Breivik was probably a new arrival - they have been very thin on the ground this winter and this is the first I've seen for some weeks.</p><p>Over the last few months an extremely rare event has taken place - a lot of management work has been going on in the nature reserve with planted sitka spruce and other conifers being removed from the middle of the reserve. At first I thought this was a response to the extremely high electricity prices but now suspect it might actually be reserve management. However, I am far from certain. Whatever the cause it will be interesting to see how the birds react - the return to an open landscape should benefit waders and wildfowl in terms of better habitat, reduced number of breeding crows and fewer hiding places for raptors.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrfTJwjGR3mMSpolcRmhMRIfyo2QY-hTBzU0ISCcPfmq3kdZEem1OqDFQ7y578u83DZ1caP1mc7Yizo-_2mJ_QVEFwLUW5f2Ue-_5s88nvp9Uy0snFUniNp4tVDyYylq0WrQ6FETBsKEuwnKFOiZPRssvjy4XxKW-T03p634_b8rdaJ7iBLrGmjg/s660/Rotevatnet_20240205_101727_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="495" data-original-width="660" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrfTJwjGR3mMSpolcRmhMRIfyo2QY-hTBzU0ISCcPfmq3kdZEem1OqDFQ7y578u83DZ1caP1mc7Yizo-_2mJ_QVEFwLUW5f2Ue-_5s88nvp9Uy0snFUniNp4tVDyYylq0WrQ6FETBsKEuwnKFOiZPRssvjy4XxKW-T03p634_b8rdaJ7iBLrGmjg/s320/Rotevatnet_20240205_101727_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR3ymmMuj0KBIWodSO9EkuM9GLFjOiZkRSYR-j91BZY21KOUVUrzkaL7QUTSf5Asz8pj-5ZjrXXz_e3FBSjvanoRmvY8wS5F4XA-OLV_EjMXVKD07Tc-Oap4fpnKA7qdKthVirb-g8ccHxuBr1qobdeG6n67SE1wL_8osjgOB9qgH0LvRZ51sgkA/s660/Rotevatnet_20240218_095122_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="495" data-original-width="660" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR3ymmMuj0KBIWodSO9EkuM9GLFjOiZkRSYR-j91BZY21KOUVUrzkaL7QUTSf5Asz8pj-5ZjrXXz_e3FBSjvanoRmvY8wS5F4XA-OLV_EjMXVKD07Tc-Oap4fpnKA7qdKthVirb-g8ccHxuBr1qobdeG6n67SE1wL_8osjgOB9qgH0LvRZ51sgkA/s320/Rotevatnet_20240218_095122_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeeS_KVV3SGgOJNu5s4DZyOQedYG2f_G6NtURCpRQxHO2BzwZ4Ogf0NpD1Rreg0dBfnrDwr7KjU9QkPwdoWJ5qiQ4mSHeaPZjqNgHvD63n5BLauvY557tsCiwoGPP1DG6WxUvZ5gXm29bbZ6vW5LZGo9TaBd7mZXootupzYnexzd7L8pVMxeWevg/s660/Rotevatnet_20240218_095128_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="495" data-original-width="660" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeeS_KVV3SGgOJNu5s4DZyOQedYG2f_G6NtURCpRQxHO2BzwZ4Ogf0NpD1Rreg0dBfnrDwr7KjU9QkPwdoWJ5qiQ4mSHeaPZjqNgHvD63n5BLauvY557tsCiwoGPP1DG6WxUvZ5gXm29bbZ6vW5LZGo9TaBd7mZXootupzYnexzd7L8pVMxeWevg/s320/Rotevatnet_20240218_095128_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These photos show the massive reduction in the planted woods in the middle of the reserve. Just a few White-tailed Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn</span>, a wind-blown Kittiwake <span style="color: #01ffff;">krykkje </span>and a Purple Sandpiper <span style="color: #01ffff;">fjæreplytt </span>of any interest. </p><p>Although Purple Sandpiper <span style="color: #01ffff;">fjæreplytt </span>are common enough in Øygarden I have often wondered how they cope when water levels are high and waves crash over the feeding areas. Today's bird fed in short grass - something I have rarely seen this species do - whatever the weather.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2k3KFLMvzQf2b8VBV7aScJpr0Fac_A4P5y9T6QtHRuIdcwrZzwgawEmO7QPpDNHK90J_AelW48Mf8pC9lVPv5g71Cx6Yvt-p-IYN78nkQXmYM6QHUqwVWedgiP7bMHrQfyc6Pz7nAj-SjFWVXTfcMqv0PK_at2IVA6yC51j84lXSGMeaeb-FRSg/s660/Purple_Sandpiper_DSC08881_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="490" data-original-width="660" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2k3KFLMvzQf2b8VBV7aScJpr0Fac_A4P5y9T6QtHRuIdcwrZzwgawEmO7QPpDNHK90J_AelW48Mf8pC9lVPv5g71Cx6Yvt-p-IYN78nkQXmYM6QHUqwVWedgiP7bMHrQfyc6Pz7nAj-SjFWVXTfcMqv0PK_at2IVA6yC51j84lXSGMeaeb-FRSg/s320/Purple_Sandpiper_DSC08881_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Purple Sandpiper <span style="color: #01ffff;">fjæreplytt </span>feeds in an alternative area due to high water levels and large waves.</div><br /><p>A few Oystercatcher <span style="color: #01ffff;">tjeld </span>on the rocks at Tjeldstø on the way home and a (the) female Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>at Nautnes were other sightings of note.</p><p>On Sunday I had intended on an early start but wintery showers made me delay a little and I checked out a few drive-by localities on my way to Skogsøy. The most surprising find was not even a bird - an Oceaneering ROV (Magnum 190) had floated in at Dåvøy - even managing to negotiate the narrow bridge. I know ROVs sometimes get lost and it isn't surprising that one ends up in Øygarden given the amount of offshore activity nearby but for one to end up at Dåvøy is remarkable.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidXGI3LvvvNiViKyHHLBfQfxXU8vECLeIC0D6QDYkyt4JbCGFrnh-xGAQyjJ-AspnK4oxvjlpqK_Q55OjL5xQZWZfkQg0JTau9VNQIjJfe7s_5jtbNlIyyci_DiiyUz_QbDQZICTsmbhTMFvQQe97jsdXXwjFc-8HPo2_LtVCBJXsUV_qcWYqCIw/s660/ROV_DSC08910_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="487" data-original-width="660" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidXGI3LvvvNiViKyHHLBfQfxXU8vECLeIC0D6QDYkyt4JbCGFrnh-xGAQyjJ-AspnK4oxvjlpqK_Q55OjL5xQZWZfkQg0JTau9VNQIjJfe7s_5jtbNlIyyci_DiiyUz_QbDQZICTsmbhTMFvQQe97jsdXXwjFc-8HPo2_LtVCBJXsUV_qcWYqCIw/s320/ROV_DSC08910_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Oceaneering Magnum ROV at Dåvøy (being inspected by a curious Grey Heron <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråhegre</span>)</div><br /><p>A second year male Common Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartand </span>was also at Dåvøy - not often they visit this particular area.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcDlGklYM8POPCsunFIiSpHlv8E_jj2zpmn-si783gi8mmjVXq3Em4ppjsRQhJq6pvhkh9XvSsmS1xoMEjNIBKenw9ZNDj59PTN8zN_16dxa_W-2gjcuBrQr-A7iCh8_XJCZra4u7q4SFRwObUkEFtj_XmO2y7Hw5m_T0UtHrxeqO27PX1wnscGQ/s660/C_Scoter_DSC08915_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="461" data-original-width="660" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcDlGklYM8POPCsunFIiSpHlv8E_jj2zpmn-si783gi8mmjVXq3Em4ppjsRQhJq6pvhkh9XvSsmS1xoMEjNIBKenw9ZNDj59PTN8zN_16dxa_W-2gjcuBrQr-A7iCh8_XJCZra4u7q4SFRwObUkEFtj_XmO2y7Hw5m_T0UtHrxeqO27PX1wnscGQ/s320/C_Scoter_DSC08915_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2cy male Common Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartand </span>at Dåvøy</div><p>Skogsøy was even windier although I managed to find a place out of the worst of things - 13 adult Kittiwakes <span style="color: #01ffff;">krykkje </span>headed north along with singles of Gannet <span style="color: #04ff00;">havsule</span>, Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">lomvi </span>and Razorbill <span style="color: #01ffff;">alke</span>.</p><p>Back home at Nautnes a Black Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">teist </span>fed on the sea in front of my house. Whilst looking at the Smew a Purple Sandpiper <span style="color: #01ffff;">fjæreplytt </span>turned up.</p><p>The woods were very quiet indeed but the sea produced most of the expected species with a small flock of Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>and decent numbers of Razorbill <span style="color: #01ffff;">alke </span>and Guillemot <span style="color: #01ffff;">lomvi </span>around. Other stuff included a Buzzard <span style="color: #01ffff;">musvåk </span>and a Greylag <span style="color: #01ffff;">grågås</span>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBdqTQPMBe16OwHtsfMd_W3uY5lhPJWZnRobK0wTkj19l3ISgLU8RRxD7F_L7uq0jvX9DXooIIQu5R7k2UsPB0GIwUxTmyS7BWkyfLbWzFi-j41KKHgtTxgSFSkAv2hfXpGmIyIkD2vf8NH0bXp3liw6oDj0DVbPOQ7pf6hYK8PXpcfWokWoFGLw/s660/GC_Grebe_DSC08599_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Not the best weather to be out in - just as well as I spent most of the day working from home. A dead Puffin <span style="color: #04ff00;">lunde </span>drifted in past my terrace on the high tide attracting the attention of the local gulls which didn't manage to lift it out of the sea. I think they had better luck once it ended up on the shore.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dJ7pOCLS84E" width="320" youtube-src-id="dJ7pOCLS84E"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />Herring Gull <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråmåke </span>trying to pick up a dead Puffin <span style="color: #04ff00;">lunde</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #04ff00;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR5skXKmK32otGdY1c2UytsWLHv25shAHdBTMTSR0gRKh77bgn9_qorVJ1-wFHKgVmyjtMv-VUPz7rt70ZT94YmWlUay9Y35ksIgfsHNn7j6lAWsWsJM1brc6porhpX8mANfAhJPuycF6C0djTKz2uM5NT1vDvGI0nxW_3nzzGX60f3F69p7Y0OQ/s660/Herring_Gull_DSC08530_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="446" data-original-width="660" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR5skXKmK32otGdY1c2UytsWLHv25shAHdBTMTSR0gRKh77bgn9_qorVJ1-wFHKgVmyjtMv-VUPz7rt70ZT94YmWlUay9Y35ksIgfsHNn7j6lAWsWsJM1brc6porhpX8mANfAhJPuycF6C0djTKz2uM5NT1vDvGI0nxW_3nzzGX60f3F69p7Y0OQ/s320/Herring_Gull_DSC08530_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /></div><p>An adult Peregrine <span style="color: #01ffff;">vandrefalk </span>at Breivik was the best bird of the day. A couple of Oystercatcher <span style="color: #01ffff;">tjeld </span>fed on the rocks close by and a small flock of Purple Sandpiper <span style="color: #04ff00;">fjæreplytt </span>put in an appearance. </p><p>On my way out to where I scan the sea three female Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #04ff00;">sjøorre </span>fed close in - the first I have seen in Øygarden this year.</p><p>A flock of around 20 Parrot Crossbills <span style="color: #01ffff;">furukorsnebb </span>and a Woodcock <span style="color: #01ffff;">rugde </span>were the best sigthings in the woods. </p><p>Crested Tits <span style="color: #01ffff;">toppmeis</span>, White-tailed Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn </span>and the usual also seen.</p><p>As usual there was an Otter fishing just off the rocks, it came onshore and started rolling about in the snow, seemingly enjoying getting clean and having a scratch.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IcaEKnvVqG0" width="320" youtube-src-id="IcaEKnvVqG0"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Otter enjoying the snow:)</div><br /><p>Elsewhere a Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin </span>fed in one of the few unfrozen areas available.</p><p>On Sunday the weather was less than optimal to start with - with heavy rain and strong winds. Can't complain though - almost all the snow disappeared during the night and the ground is thawing - great news for the Woodcock <span style="color: #01ffff;">rugde </span>and Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin </span>that have quite literally gambled everything on a survivable winter:)</p><p>I started with some drive-bys. Very wintery again with temperatures at or below freezing and full snow cover.</p><p>Once again most observations were from the house. Woodcocks <span style="color: #01ffff;">rugde </span>flew over on Monday and Friday this week.</p><p>On Tuesday a first winter Red-throated Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom </span>turned up on the sea in front of the terrace and a Curlew <span style="color: #01ffff;">storspove </span>fed on the rocks - surprisingly few and far between this winter - normally this is quite an easy species to see during the winter months.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3izt6F-A5nH2n101yaqyTyFfKQTqzSxMsKEcaGP2ImYBv7AB3UIx8_0dL3ODtRmQyENuDns4ec73GUuS-rZdNLXqoMRjSCdkC4jusordyDHFJgrgKzpu8Mx2PnLoMCS4umpYoqEJXdK1wMJRyFhqMumHfxFrHwSCjHNnS572l4Nvc7dWW0a6LQ/s660/RTD_W3A5012_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="469" data-original-width="660" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3izt6F-A5nH2n101yaqyTyFfKQTqzSxMsKEcaGP2ImYBv7AB3UIx8_0dL3ODtRmQyENuDns4ec73GUuS-rZdNLXqoMRjSCdkC4jusordyDHFJgrgKzpu8Mx2PnLoMCS4umpYoqEJXdK1wMJRyFhqMumHfxFrHwSCjHNnS572l4Nvc7dWW0a6LQ/s320/RTD_W3A5012_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Red-throated Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom </span>at Nautnes</div><br /><p>I also did a drive-by at Dåvøy on the way home from the shop - resulting in another new for the year in Øygarden and in fact a new species for this locality in the form of a Tufted Duck <span style="color: #04ff00;">toppand</span>. Never very common out here in the winter this bird has no doubt been forced off some lake to the sea. Winter can produce some unusual wildfowl so it pays to keep an eye out:)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglxQWrFDjVOUOtQvKli0wCPPJG9_gFbw9jZBXxj83jPIHl_JNFplupZJ2FQ3R79ZG8aSKGoy26lBW010pO_AvWI-IbNZ8kG6_cqYzUKnWANgv-FlPcBsGgP8h5ZQXquClk2gCLylX53UTTOi6UUR6cEv7iQ7qJRuEEUZqxDW9B47FOquolAbjmDg/s660/Tufted_Duck_DSC08432_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="437" data-original-width="660" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglxQWrFDjVOUOtQvKli0wCPPJG9_gFbw9jZBXxj83jPIHl_JNFplupZJ2FQ3R79ZG8aSKGoy26lBW010pO_AvWI-IbNZ8kG6_cqYzUKnWANgv-FlPcBsGgP8h5ZQXquClk2gCLylX53UTTOi6UUR6cEv7iQ7qJRuEEUZqxDW9B47FOquolAbjmDg/s320/Tufted_Duck_DSC08432_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Tufted Duck <span style="color: #04ff00;">toppand </span>at Dåvøy</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDyN_DneoNqFZiiUOWnDDsjivasEsFDj3bbg5G8ytVzWDvTCT5lap44s2Fk4hWWpUneyE7xyLDFLXZUHtDTvxFq5sZg4bi87lwheikQLF3jMnfLwffYXIY8CxRqQCkTNBK67tp2HZIt2t8o36Njt8ZWlyVurxTI8rKjThDRs8l_o6IxHdZ-Ic0_Q/s660/Heron_DSC08442_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="469" data-original-width="660" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDyN_DneoNqFZiiUOWnDDsjivasEsFDj3bbg5G8ytVzWDvTCT5lap44s2Fk4hWWpUneyE7xyLDFLXZUHtDTvxFq5sZg4bi87lwheikQLF3jMnfLwffYXIY8CxRqQCkTNBK67tp2HZIt2t8o36Njt8ZWlyVurxTI8rKjThDRs8l_o6IxHdZ-Ic0_Q/s320/Heron_DSC08442_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Some of the 41 Grey Herons <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråhegre </span>present at Dåvøy</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>Two Tree Sparrows <span style="color: #01ffff;">pilfink </span>returned to the garden on Wednesday and a Redwing <span style="color: #01ffff;">rødvingetrost </span>put in an appearance too. A late and lazy round at Herdlevær without a scope gave Woodcock <span style="color: #01ffff;">rugde</span>, Rock Pipit <span style="color: #01ffff;">skjærpiplerke </span>and point blank views of at least two White-tailed Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn</span>. Several unidentified auks headed north, a Curlew <span style="color: #04ff00;">storspove </span>put in a brief appearance and a couple of Black Guillemot <span style="color: #04ff00;">teist </span>fed on the sea. Small numbers of seaduck were present with a few each of Common Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartand </span>and Long-tailed Duck <span style="color: #01ffff;">havelle </span>and around 40 Eiders <span style="color: #01ffff;">ærfugl</span>. </p><p>The woods produced little, just a couple of Common Crossbill <span style="color: #01ffff;">grankorsnebb</span>, a few each of Coal Tit <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartmeis </span>and Crested Tit <span style="color: #01ffff;">toppmeis </span>and a Wren <span style="color: #01ffff;">gjerdesmett</span>.</p><p>Several Collared Dove <span style="color: #04ff00;">tyrkerdue </span>were present at Oen on my way to Skogsøy. </p><p>After this it was fishing for the afternoon, seven fish of four species, most of which went back in the sea and a few came home for dinner:)</p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

I went for potentially hard to get species rather than number of species and chose Skogsøy for seabirds that are sometimes tricky at this time of year. Most stuff was rather distant but Gannet <span style="color: #01ffff;">havsule</span>, several Razorbills <span style="color: #01ffff;">alke</span>, 20+ unidentified auks, a couple of Kittiwake <span style="color: #01ffff;">krykkje </span>and a Great Northern Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">islom </span>passed. 35 Common Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartand </span>fed on the sea, at least until a Peregrine <span style="color: #01ffff;">vandrefalk</span> turned up. The woods were typically quiet with just a few Wrens <span style="color: #01ffff;">gjerdesemett</span>, 12 Parrot Crossbill <span style="color: #01ffff;">furukorsnebb </span>and a couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers <span style="color: #01ffff;">flaggspett</span>.</p><p>Two of the better sightings for the day were from my terrace at Nautnes - the long-staying female Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>and an unseasonal Oystercatcher <span style="color: #01ffff;">tjeld</span>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOOMQn3ahPcWob_3qBKd2fL3zSUZ9SlBNNzxpJN-SfjwmbFxLkxDAQwGeDw3dH5UqE1AeS0D2yRF67JrByL6fTECRCPkXK1i1yHmk6hLJsUdXsRQSFWg1fJMQ4d2S-20FWNCMW1MBGJapHjH_ALCafkqgEeiupljVQjT7lNR2SHqrsektbmx0Qrg/s660/Velvet_Scoter_W3A4921_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="488" data-original-width="660" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOOMQn3ahPcWob_3qBKd2fL3zSUZ9SlBNNzxpJN-SfjwmbFxLkxDAQwGeDw3dH5UqE1AeS0D2yRF67JrByL6fTECRCPkXK1i1yHmk6hLJsUdXsRQSFWg1fJMQ4d2S-20FWNCMW1MBGJapHjH_ALCafkqgEeiupljVQjT7lNR2SHqrsektbmx0Qrg/s320/Velvet_Scoter_W3A4921_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Velevet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>photographed from my terrace</div><br /><p>The last day of 2023 was rather greyer with winds from the east. Again I had a couple of species on my target list but one of them was a no show:( However, Dåvøy produced Woodcock <span style="color: #01ffff;">rugde </span>and Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin </span>and 37 Herons <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråhegre</span>. Solberg was next up and was generally quiet but a Great Northern Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">islom </span>on the sea meant it was worth the effort.</p><p>After this I was joined by my daughter and we tried our luck at a few places - a male Teal <span style="color: #01ffff;">krikkand </span>with Mallards <span style="color: #01ffff;">stokkand </span>at Tjeldstø where there was also a big flock of gulls. One very white headed individual is probably worth some more investigation....A minimum of six White-tailed Eagles <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn </span>also present here along with Rock Pipit <span style="color: #01ffff;">skjærpiplerke</span>, Fieldfare <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråtrost </span>and many of the usual suspects.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC1NeF7C6PQHvU3NyvLq51rb61wIwEwQaDwDY8kgitGP0P1qw6-SRV_MZeQgKsdK3r4SIAYVHubXP6tR4oLylwa4b_2Fsx0chWNJTg3aJ3kzvNNPVqfm9AsGMx45QGIhNg2ICkD0BlAZuhtPA8a2wc_LRHIbCLhw5H7r2Q6pwyTOFEtRMpK0h4Dg/s660/Herring_Gull_DSC08144_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="456" data-original-width="660" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC1NeF7C6PQHvU3NyvLq51rb61wIwEwQaDwDY8kgitGP0P1qw6-SRV_MZeQgKsdK3r4SIAYVHubXP6tR4oLylwa4b_2Fsx0chWNJTg3aJ3kzvNNPVqfm9AsGMx45QGIhNg2ICkD0BlAZuhtPA8a2wc_LRHIbCLhw5H7r2Q6pwyTOFEtRMpK0h4Dg/s320/Herring_Gull_DSC08144_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Lots of variety in the amount of head streaking....</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggmQaA4_gqghwyvwROIXgMf9PWvYkqH_H7G0xWezRUoqSYYXQT27zLWPflzJnf2dqJ_61IaBRo4edzREU_THtvQgLzA9git_kaWmlBxijuSWXiiEIped5iJJ0ff5B-MmgCJpMQF1ulbGurCLMCRoFrcAOtuCac_NAFBRbHwhOu6Eue6oCBh1J7YQ/s660/RTD_DSC08173_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="441" data-original-width="660" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggmQaA4_gqghwyvwROIXgMf9PWvYkqH_H7G0xWezRUoqSYYXQT27zLWPflzJnf2dqJ_61IaBRo4edzREU_THtvQgLzA9git_kaWmlBxijuSWXiiEIped5iJJ0ff5B-MmgCJpMQF1ulbGurCLMCRoFrcAOtuCac_NAFBRbHwhOu6Eue6oCBh1J7YQ/s320/RTD_DSC08173_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Red-throated Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom </span>at Alvheim</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>Next up was Alvheim for yet more eagles and a Red-throated Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom </span>on the sea. Biggest flock in Oslo was 25, biggest in Hamar 45 - but just random sightings really. Still flocks of Redpoll <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråsisik </span>knocking about in both places.</p><p>Near Hamar a flock of 70 Yellowhammer <span style="color: #01ffff;">gulspurv </span>was the most I have seen in one place for years! Also on Hamar good views of Beaver, Roe Deer and Fox. Goshawk <span style="color: #01ffff;">hønsehauk </span>here and there and, in a Hamar context at least, a Robin <span style="color: #01ffff;">rødstrupe </span>was probably the most unusual sighting.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYjTEFwFgW6nNvhOTKXUAMRM1SNjBOZuEFwmem_9a045tOmKF0FbBHkSvYSpi6N9f79b1Xjt3Y1W0Y6JpjmAeoblh5JJjfuL_wkmxk2aIBJvvPFo-_vSU1Yb0vNNFw65j4iiAOPKZK5rZgRYJKcPhYGAkOrYfiRexIj__UHTJtOZ1F4fjXihZJSA/s660/Beaver_DSC08080_e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="498" data-original-width="660" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYjTEFwFgW6nNvhOTKXUAMRM1SNjBOZuEFwmem_9a045tOmKF0FbBHkSvYSpi6N9f79b1Xjt3Y1W0Y6JpjmAeoblh5JJjfuL_wkmxk2aIBJvvPFo-_vSU1Yb0vNNFw65j4iiAOPKZK5rZgRYJKcPhYGAkOrYfiRexIj__UHTJtOZ1F4fjXihZJSA/s320/Beaver_DSC08080_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLvO9d53mK9IhqDV3LHPB7xMBfbu1Dff6GXdFrWPejxqsX-xznZQuByvECZZAIusCyHjjlsS3sVvl0-RPSY-nHR64KDjqImbw5bbo1oxCVLHs_E3tH-NoCtJpoEWe9ZK9vCuzWbKs9dX_pOuUHJBFg_3I8WhsYbYl7LunGbk1SBVjoaTJYTY5BSA/s660/Beaver_DSC08096_e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="510" data-original-width="660" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLvO9d53mK9IhqDV3LHPB7xMBfbu1Dff6GXdFrWPejxqsX-xznZQuByvECZZAIusCyHjjlsS3sVvl0-RPSY-nHR64KDjqImbw5bbo1oxCVLHs_E3tH-NoCtJpoEWe9ZK9vCuzWbKs9dX_pOuUHJBFg_3I8WhsYbYl7LunGbk1SBVjoaTJYTY5BSA/s320/Beaver_DSC08096_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Beaver were very active near Hamar</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOadw_aGqJEHY9tTtX97HT7tZDFxtXPSIgXXb4gVYCd4e-8eqHfzRcCliMcIZk8v3yHteoCauzeJdlExExL21Y2uq27EaovVcvxSXstNESabJP0cdT3hizniL2R2LdO7lWoRtf7cPFu24o6h27yImbK0KwFUyD53gx26TXDsktADXBB54daMuKRA/s660/Redpoll_DSC08075_e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="479" data-original-width="660" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOadw_aGqJEHY9tTtX97HT7tZDFxtXPSIgXXb4gVYCd4e-8eqHfzRcCliMcIZk8v3yHteoCauzeJdlExExL21Y2uq27EaovVcvxSXstNESabJP0cdT3hizniL2R2LdO7lWoRtf7cPFu24o6h27yImbK0KwFUyD53gx26TXDsktADXBB54daMuKRA/s320/Redpoll_DSC08075_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Redpoll <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråsisik </span>flocks still numerous in the east of Norway</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhqJAS1RCLNjeszgQ8fPAx64UbYm7c13atPmngZdnBTF4DZlJan_nCwtxPIBYwatusoz2C4sE4IdoBKRrJqOYRZZdx-Sx9_PbR9fPj0h7t14DwvQJSG7ebKOJSwoyO5izqcBDu5_jtI5npI59mt8_fyIQEvi6Krg6Z6nvoEQuuOshHL0xoMT-8RA/s660/Roe_Deer_DSC08009_e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="486" data-original-width="660" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhqJAS1RCLNjeszgQ8fPAx64UbYm7c13atPmngZdnBTF4DZlJan_nCwtxPIBYwatusoz2C4sE4IdoBKRrJqOYRZZdx-Sx9_PbR9fPj0h7t14DwvQJSG7ebKOJSwoyO5izqcBDu5_jtI5npI59mt8_fyIQEvi6Krg6Z6nvoEQuuOshHL0xoMT-8RA/s320/Roe_Deer_DSC08009_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Roe Deer struggling in the cold</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoxhC6payhV0v2K6D7Eb1KNhn8TpKe-ujsBq7WOI8rjC6__zpczROyy6aDjdKdUMYtWFufRM-CIuf6kQtg12p4BLxrKZyALx0SiQfXcZfcCW130DdPM3Hhnm2uM26FPOp0Rop8TLz7lhvbzmva89tO7xoQnf27u_XWdfhsDu0qe1OAURiRUHmMcA/s660/Goshawk_DSC08130_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="473" data-original-width="660" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoxhC6payhV0v2K6D7Eb1KNhn8TpKe-ujsBq7WOI8rjC6__zpczROyy6aDjdKdUMYtWFufRM-CIuf6kQtg12p4BLxrKZyALx0SiQfXcZfcCW130DdPM3Hhnm2uM26FPOp0Rop8TLz7lhvbzmva89tO7xoQnf27u_XWdfhsDu0qe1OAURiRUHmMcA/s320/Goshawk_DSC08130_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Goshawk <span style="color: #01ffff;">hønsehauk </span>in downtown Oslo</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

All the snow and ice that was present whilst I was away rapidly thawed. Quite a bit of wind and showers throughout the period although it was work, life and a bout of covid that kept me chained to the house. No birding at all, although I did have my binoculars and point and pray camera with me whenever I did actually leave the house. As usual under such circumstances it was my terrace that produced most of the interest. Not much in the way of daylight as we approached the shortest day of the year but this was absolutely not the limiting factor this time around.</p><p>White-tailed Eagle <span style="color: #01ffff;">havørn </span>and up to four Otters were seen daily from the house. My bird feeders proved attractive to flocks of Greenfinch <span style="color: #01ffff;">grønnfink </span>and a Chaffinch <span style="color: #01ffff;">bokfink </span>or two. Sparrowhawk <span style="color: #01ffff;">spurvehauk </span>had a go at the garden birds a couple of time. Other stuff from the terrace included a first year Great Northern Diver <span style="color: #01ffff;">islom </span>on 21.12 when an unseasonal flock of Oystercatcher <span style="color: #01ffff;">tjeld </span>also turned up. Velvet Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">sjøorre </span>and more also seen at Nautnes.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtFf0-3cqI3E57NUem8n_3cKKrRiUVBxKNBjz2YSny9zR6_mUjwhMWNW8jyty-8rjbJh2Az24swW4yGXd5LMusqlLH7bEGY2M1LNsJOi0VO9Wp-l24cd6X5qVKswHdF0KBPR4wWK165mEPREEAw0GhSS3kC3R26nYRahg1wpLHaNZH8PFPmegeIA/s660/GND_DSC07935_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="509" data-original-width="660" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtFf0-3cqI3E57NUem8n_3cKKrRiUVBxKNBjz2YSny9zR6_mUjwhMWNW8jyty-8rjbJh2Az24swW4yGXd5LMusqlLH7bEGY2M1LNsJOi0VO9Wp-l24cd6X5qVKswHdF0KBPR4wWK165mEPREEAw0GhSS3kC3R26nYRahg1wpLHaNZH8PFPmegeIA/s320/GND_DSC07935_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZD7ivOA_znhFzPIuf5MalqVJ48ZigeB0pQmYFaUI2lpg00_dfoUCWqWkTaYFI9RFovDzcXkK0OCoo1WbvntXkZ6Bl-E-db3qrL3GBMt2cCokc0ODNGD8viiHOzk4xaE_hefhOp_7iCAJDRRyPedCScym34GqGToX2gaj42NW1YpjQRZBxNaBq6w/s660/GND_DSC07970_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="464" data-original-width="660" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZD7ivOA_znhFzPIuf5MalqVJ48ZigeB0pQmYFaUI2lpg00_dfoUCWqWkTaYFI9RFovDzcXkK0OCoo1WbvntXkZ6Bl-E-db3qrL3GBMt2cCokc0ODNGD8viiHOzk4xaE_hefhOp_7iCAJDRRyPedCScym34GqGToX2gaj42NW1YpjQRZBxNaBq6w/s320/GND_DSC07970_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">First year Great Northern Diver islom photographed from my terrace 21.12</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaIxLdw4cVKm5xRCinMSLH-vb2dut8SrDSpFiW2CUk37X6NIpVnpa73H-IV0cexRc9co8BSqaQfKXocseUkakC1ZsYSgEnIUOPpJU7yc20gPp6ED8tAT5WzThVdmBjjApicW9ijrX660DCDb6gez-DN044E4OJhvEk1Z78DyZv6l_1HtYbahTH9w/s660/Oystercatcher_DSC07899_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="452" data-original-width="660" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaIxLdw4cVKm5xRCinMSLH-vb2dut8SrDSpFiW2CUk37X6NIpVnpa73H-IV0cexRc9co8BSqaQfKXocseUkakC1ZsYSgEnIUOPpJU7yc20gPp6ED8tAT5WzThVdmBjjApicW9ijrX660DCDb6gez-DN044E4OJhvEk1Z78DyZv6l_1HtYbahTH9w/s320/Oystercatcher_DSC07899_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A most unseasonal flock of Oystercatcher tjeld turned up in front of the house on 21.12</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Oystercatcher are seen in very small numbers most winters but a flock of four is a big flock during the wintertime:)</div><p><br /></p><p>Tjeldstø was largely frozen during the period but a male Teal <span style="color: #01ffff;">krikkand </span>joined Mallard <span style="color: #01ffff;">stokkand </span>and Mergansers <span style="color: #01ffff;">siland </span>on the sea there. Several Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin</span>, lots of Crossbills <span style="color: #01ffff;">korsnebb</span>, small flocks of Redwings <span style="color: #01ffff;">rødvingetrost </span>and the usual stuff. Obviously some movement over the sea too with Common Scoter <span style="color: #01ffff;">svartand </span>and Red-throated Divers <span style="color: #01ffff;">smålom </span>on the move.</p><p>Some years I have thought that I can separate Parrot <span style="color: #01ffff;">furukorsnebb </span>and Common Crossbills <span style="color: #01ffff;">grankorsnebb </span>on call. This might have been true at times but this year it seems impossible. Most flocks I have been able to identify this autumn have been single species flocks but a group of Crossbills at Breivik seemed to be a mixture.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7ONHUAaIwigdDkp1r24989nZMVxafNvgh5mVU4hYYYoxAu_zAOye-x3gsZdVA5HDoMSmhGHb9Ushf8fDox-Bj5rHjJMdqL1kW5n_ZmYXkEd2XUlmYGnw9iknpvsabOgTSlueXeb6Q6QGzlOvWGhhaL6Giysm9tPbLlRpCw4BDB56iZB33znxXvw/s660/Common_Crossbill_W3A0695_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Very frustrating to not be out and about!</p><p>Half an hour at Breivik on 06 November was very pleasant but not much other than a few Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin</span>, a few Bullfinch <span style="color: #01ffff;">dompap </span>and a Sparrowhawk <span style="color: #01ffff;">spurvehauk</span>. The two Scaup <span style="color: #01ffff;">bergand </span>were on Rotevatnet along with a couple of Wigeon <span style="color: #01ffff;">brunnakke</span>, a Tufted Duck <span style="color: #01ffff;">toppand </span>and the usual Mallard <span style="color: #01ffff;">stokkand </span>and Goldeneye <span style="color: #01ffff;">kvinand</span>. Back in the garden a Crested Tit <span style="color: #01ffff;">toppmeis </span>actually came into the garden - a common enough species but not often they come so close to the house, a Carrion Crow <span style="color: #04ff00;">svartkråke </span>flew over and several Common Crossbill <span style="color: #01ffff;">grankorsnebb </span>paused nearby.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGOhQyuQaAqHlY6RrSoaogvrsW1bJ90yqGH2gb3TNHfeVmZ4Kyy80vy4RjmylkHLcQ9K5GzSsv4jO9m2QayuEr0vdqGj9DktMUdGksri39QbMG4H45qlhBvgP4fKrxwWUqB9jXEVmMAPB_spG4uLFZv-RzTYcX1puesVQulttrcaZajNC4jNfHDA/s660/Snipe_W3A0230_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="660" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGOhQyuQaAqHlY6RrSoaogvrsW1bJ90yqGH2gb3TNHfeVmZ4Kyy80vy4RjmylkHLcQ9K5GzSsv4jO9m2QayuEr0vdqGj9DktMUdGksri39QbMG4H45qlhBvgP4fKrxwWUqB9jXEVmMAPB_spG4uLFZv-RzTYcX1puesVQulttrcaZajNC4jNfHDA/s320/Snipe_W3A0230_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5VUs9SXU43zYMlAKSRlNpWgKBo8YMYUsL3R3f0jzbxATIzNmDLJFFurj4QyX1Vxi5NvUgEeXGYpcmHwuojtUuHD66fVilGIF2-mASkviF4WeLLkYavUHnYPGOP0exk93RkJtOwi8sejj_cXKon7w5ms3qUghxlZQJgikwfQH5HBTHVN-MMihOg/s660/Snipe_W3A0255_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="473" data-original-width="660" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5VUs9SXU43zYMlAKSRlNpWgKBo8YMYUsL3R3f0jzbxATIzNmDLJFFurj4QyX1Vxi5NvUgEeXGYpcmHwuojtUuHD66fVilGIF2-mASkviF4WeLLkYavUHnYPGOP0exk93RkJtOwi8sejj_cXKon7w5ms3qUghxlZQJgikwfQH5HBTHVN-MMihOg/s320/Snipe_W3A0255_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpAmgvG9QIN7fa0yXNzGO-TVZON9Fu_YO7ft-9blFUjnoyVp_NKgNJ5tOEfrXKi23WtVTNhYZkSXeOZo2VHhLNH8v8G-4S4UXIqB3kBqnRVEcVfUValP8cT0L_a-4cH_VismCDqFv-JQ1rLhBjlcH6SH2_ITMARzo_iFc8ih1gmnhQL1uPrPkIpQ/s660/Snipe_W3A0271_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="520" data-original-width="660" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpAmgvG9QIN7fa0yXNzGO-TVZON9Fu_YO7ft-9blFUjnoyVp_NKgNJ5tOEfrXKi23WtVTNhYZkSXeOZo2VHhLNH8v8G-4S4UXIqB3kBqnRVEcVfUValP8cT0L_a-4cH_VismCDqFv-JQ1rLhBjlcH6SH2_ITMARzo_iFc8ih1gmnhQL1uPrPkIpQ/s320/Snipe_W3A0271_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin </span>hiding in plain view at Breivik</div><br /><p>The next day was similar with a female Blackcap <span style="color: #01ffff;">munk </span>turning up in the garden. I saw some roadside Waxwings <span style="color: #01ffff;">sidensvans </span>near Nautnes but didn't have time to stop.</p><p>I took a couple of hours free on the 10 November - and there is obviously still plenty to see. First bird I saw from the garden was a Goshawk <span style="color: #01ffff;">hønsehauk </span>having a good go at a Herring Gull <span style="color: #01ffff;">gråmåke </span>but it decided to call off the attack. Brambling <span style="color: #01ffff;">bjørkefink </span>and a Chiff-chaff <span style="color: #01ffff;">gransanger </span>that may have been <i>tristis </i>but did not call were also seen in the garden and a Snipe <span style="color: #01ffff;">enkeltbekkasin </span>posed nicely also at Nautnes.</p><p>I had a quick look at Hellesøy where migrants were a female Blackcap <span style="color: #01ffff;">munk </span>and a few Bullfinch <span style="color: #01ffff;">dompap</span>. Stopping briefly at Sæle I was rewarded with cracking views of five Waxwing <span style="color: #01ffff;">sidensvans</span>. Now all the rowan berries have gone they have moved onto other things. Introduced bushes are the only thing keeping them hanging around now:) The Scaup <span style="color: #01ffff;">bergand </span>/ Tufty <span style="color: #01ffff;">toppand </span>combo remained at Tjeldstø where one young Whooper <span style="color: #01ffff;">sangsvane </span>was going it alone. Two Woodpigeon <span style="color: #01ffff;">ringdue </span>here too.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0Q7zVpLyiMPjxPVZ8G4jRjSWH908x-EXgKX5M4q8qJZf43v7EhhosboW0riNJ-A_f8MartQ7QjbrgYaLyIwXHStzuIZ3YzKHpplFovtWWFuLXD8Zh08N5lb_XefmyiuJ0FzAg8PkscUu72tDGO6TDhtbz1Cqq4V1Q5qZ9kdrow3y5ogcVx4lAg/s660/Chiff-chaff_W3A0661_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="489" data-original-width="660" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0Q7zVpLyiMPjxPVZ8G4jRjSWH908x-EXgKX5M4q8qJZf43v7EhhosboW0riNJ-A_f8MartQ7QjbrgYaLyIwXHStzuIZ3YzKHpplFovtWWFuLXD8Zh08N5lb_XefmyiuJ0FzAg8PkscUu72tDGO6TDhtbz1Cqq4V1Q5qZ9kdrow3y5ogcVx4lAg/s320/Chiff-chaff_W3A0661_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjurgLUI_ujI2NkU_XPh57gBuHjBPc5URUx37KyBHKYzx36BPrcS-PiH8Rt6uWS0OMFKW23L3MP6Mi8d27irqkFWRL9C-13Wgy1fGvH0TEe8zGATQRRmwyeFnddk6iqGC7YdV0al8TzAkuV8l-6XiYMHC7xNa90hEER0UrlFBprcUHwD4Z7uz-BTA/s660/Chiff-chaff_W3A0678_e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="660" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjurgLUI_ujI2NkU_XPh57gBuHjBPc5URUx37KyBHKYzx36BPrcS-PiH8Rt6uWS0OMFKW23L3MP6Mi8d27irqkFWRL9C-13Wgy1fGvH0TEe8zGATQRRmwyeFnddk6iqGC7YdV0al8TzAkuV8l-6XiYMHC7xNa90hEER0UrlFBprcUHwD4Z7uz-BTA/s320/Chiff-chaff_W3A0678_e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Potentially the bird of the day with a very <i>tristis </i>feel to it.
