Øygarden 06 - 16 July 2021 - Struggling to get back in business

I was too tired to do much after an exhausting trip offshore. I have never really lost my motivation for birding before so this period was a real struggle.

I didn't really go out birding as such despite having all the time in the world and in quarantine to boot.

From my terrace at Nautnes Cuckoo gjøk were still calling when I returned home, the Greylags grågås were obviously training up for their imminent departure before the hunting season starts. Snipe enkeltbekkasin were still displaying, Common Sandpipers strandsnipe and Curlew storspove alarming nearby, a few White-tailed Eagles havørn knocking about, migrating Greenshank gluttsnipe and Whimbrel småspove passed over, Whitethroats tornsanger and Willow Warblers løvsanger feeding young in the garden - all in all a pretty normal early July situation.

The only unusual sighting was a Nuthatch spettmeis which took up residence at Nautnes - not normal at all for July:)

Greenshank gluttsnipe were also regular at Tjeldstø in this period.

Barnacle Goose hvitkinngås on Hernar

Twite bergirisk

The only birding trip was to Hernar on 16 June where the highlights were a Green Sandpiper skogsnipe flying up and a Barnacle Goose hvitkinngås resting there. Plenty of Twite bergirisk and the usual selection of Hernar species. A quick tour of the islands on the way home produced the usual Black Guillemots teist and small numbers of Common Scoter svartand.

A family of Siskin grønnsisik at Hatten were the first I've seen for a while in Øygarden - this species has been very thin on the ground so far this year.
