Oslo 23-20.09.2025 - Auks

A week in Oslo with very little opportunity to get out whilst back west conditions were brilliant and a number of rarities turned up.

On 23rd a skein of Pinkfeet kortnebbgås flew over the flat as I returned from the shops, these are so much more common in eastern Norway than back home. Another migrant turned up on the terrace on 26th in the form of a Wren gjerdesmett - not normally something that turns up in the back yard.

On 27th I spent a couple of hours on Gressholmen - something I have managed to do much more than Hernar this year. An obvious influx of Guillemots lomvi and Razorbill alke with the first seen before the boat even left Aker Brygge. The island was fairly quiet but several Chiff-chaff gransanger, a Brambling bjørkefink or two, five Dunlin myrsnipe, a late Common Tern makrellterne and the first Velvet Scoter sjøorre of the autumn made for a nice visit.

This influx was even mentioned in the news!

The next day was spent in the woods north of Oslo which were deathly quiet most of the time. However, a couple of Black Woodpecker svartspett turned up along with a few Jays nøtteskrike, one of which was much tamer than this species normally is!
