Øygarden 11-17 November 2023 - Crossbills can be difficult

The calm weather with light easterlies continues.

On 11 October I spent the entire day outside, only the morning birding, the rest of the day was spent changing to winter tyres, doing stuff in the garden and fishing:)

Breivik and Herdlevær produced the usual suspects with highlight being a flock of 11 Jackdaw kaie which dropped in briefly, an uncommon migrant here November is one of the best months to see this species. Several Snipe enkeltbekkasin, lots of Crossbills korsnebb, small flocks of Redwings rødvingetrost and the usual stuff. Obviously some movement over the sea too with Common Scoter svartand and Red-throated Divers smålom on the move.

Some years I have thought that I can separate Parrot furukorsnebb and Common Crossbills grankorsnebb on call. This might have been true at times but this year it seems impossible. Most flocks I have been able to identify this autumn have been single species flocks but a group of Crossbills at Breivik seemed to be a mixture.

Fishing gave me a new fish species in the form of a couple of Hake lysing!

The next day was also spent outside:) Skogsøy in the morning, fishing in the afternoon:)

A couple of hours spent seawatching showed that there seemed to be less passing than yesterday but a couple of Great Northern Diver islom, a few Little Auk alkekonge and "plenty" of Kittiwake krykkje meant it was quite worthwhile.

On Monday 13 November it was back to work but I spent a couple of hours visiting various localities. A Willow Tit granmeis at Hatten was the first I've had in Øygarden this year:) Otherwise Jay nøtteskrike, Woodpigeon ringdue, small numbers of Waxwing sidensvans and a Slav Grebe horndykker were the highlights. Still flocks of up to 30 Redwing rødvingetrost around.

The next day I was not out at all but clocked up a Hawfinch kjernebiter flying over my house and a Velvet Scoter sjøorre also flew over:)

Whoopers sangsvane at Kollsnes

The rest of the week was spent away from home and/or working but a female Blackcap munk turned up in the garden again for a couple of days.

Øygarden 17-18 December 2018 - Difficult Crossbills

Southerly winds, relatively calm and mild.

There are plenty of crossbills in Øygarden at the moment, though identifying them is a different matter. There are some that look and sound like Common Crossbill grankorsnebb, others that look and sound like Parrot Crossbills furukorsnebb and others in what appear to be mixed flocks (something I am often sceptical of for some reason).

A walk at Skogsøy on 17 December produced little, with just a Peregrine vandrefalk of note. Apart from this small numbers of Common Scoter svartand on the sea, a few Whooper Swans sangsvane on the lagoons and the usual White-tailed Eagle havørn.

Male Common Crossbill grankorsnebb

Crossbill - possibly large billed Common? Upper mandible suitably decurved, lower mandible not really that deep or "S" curved, tips of both mandibles visible. Mmmm......

Parrot Crossbill furukorsnebb, suitably deep and curved lower mandible, no crossing tips visible

Middle bird probably Parrot - massive and steeply curved upper mandible, bulging and deep lower.....

Elsewhere I ran into flocks of crossbills here and there with eight Parrot Crossbill furukorsnebb feeding near Tjeldstø. At Hellesøy I came across a flock that seemed to be a mixed flock of Common Crossbill grankorsnebb and Parrot Crossbill furukorsnebb. Sometimes large billed Common are difficult to separate from Parrot.....

On 18th I was out without my camera (stupid I know) and had Rock Pipit skjærpiplerke down to less that two metres away and a cracking fly-by Goshawk hønsehauk....

Herdlevær 11 December 2016 - These are better days

A fantastic day weatherwise - no wind at all, mostly sunny and mild.

Little Grebe
Massively cropped record shot of the Little Grebe dvergdykker

Not too bad for birds either - highlight was my first local Little Grebe dvergdykker for the year. A Slavonian Grebe horndykker also put in an appearance.

White-tailed Eagle

Small numbers of the usual suspects also showed including a couple of adult White-tailed Eagle havørn, two Velvet Scoter sjøorre, several Purple Sandpiper fjæreplytt and a few Starling stær.

A flock of Common Crossbills grankorsnebb with larger than normal bills foraged in trees beside the car park. Nice.

Earlier in the day a very vocal Water Rail vannrikse made itself very noticeable from my garden at Nautnes.

Herdlevær 22 January 2014 - Winter birding warms up!

Fairly calm and verging on sunny at times.

The birds are obviously never far away - with the improved conditions there was plenty to see today.

Tundra Bean Geese sædgås at Breivik - short, small bills with restricted orange markings

The day was kick started with a flock of six Tundra Bean Goose (rossicus) sædgås at Breivik - though it seemed like they moved on as they were not present on my way home. These birds were probably the same as reported by a neighbour as flying over Tjeldstø yesterday afternoon. This find ties in nicely with sightings from elsewhere in Norway and the Shetlands.

Arctic Redpoll polarsisik. Very pale undersides with little streaking, no streaking on the undertail coverts

Unstreaked white rump reaching well up the back

Herdlevær was quite productive with the highlight being an apparent Arctic Redpoll polarsisik.

Purple Sandpiper fjæreplytt with a relatively long bill

"Coughing"....

...and out it comes! Not often one can capture waders regurgitating pellets

A shorter-billed Purple Sandpiper fjæreplytt - very photogenic

Black Guillemot teist

Same bird with prey

...and with the red feet adding a splash of colour.

Common Crossbill grankorsnebb

One of three White-tailed Eagles havørn present

Plenty of other species here too including a flock of around 120 Mealy Redpoll gråsisik heading north. A (the?) Song Thrush måltrost put in an appearance and there was a decent showing of the usual suspects including Purple Sandpipers fjæreplytt, Black Guillemot teist and Snipe enkeltbekkasin.

Common Snipe enkeltbekkasin

Another Snipe enkeltbekkasin was at Skjold.

Tjeldstø 16 November 2009 - More crossbills

Goshawk hønsehauk
Probable Parrot Crossbill furukorsnebb

Male Common Crossbill grankorsnebb

Female Common Crossbill grankorsnebb

Highlight today was a Goshawk hønsehauk which ambushed me whilst I was trying to photograph some Common Crossbills grankorsnebb.

A couple of Little Auk alkekonge, Rock Pipit skjærpiplerke and three Whooper Swans sangsvane were among the other sightings.
