Norwegian, Danish, German and Dutch sectors 19.10 - 01.11 - Worst ever offshore trip for birding?

A couple of weeks spent offshore crossing through 100's of kilometres of the North Sea. I spent less time than I have ever done out on deck and was lucky to get out for 10-15 minutes a day and never at the prime time around dawn - usually very shortly after it gets light most bids re-orientate and continue on their way.

The best birds in an offshore North Sea context were a Grey Wagtail vinterle on 24 October and a Wren gjerdesmett that came onboard in the Dutch sector. Not considered as much of a migrant by many this species routinely crosses stretches of sea on migration.

Other than that just very small numbers of the usual late autumn migrants, Redwing rødvingetrost, Fieldfare gråtrost, Blackbird svarttrost, Robin rødstrupe, Chaffinch bokfink, Starlings stær and a Sparrowhawk spurvehauk. Not much of a haul for the last two weeks of October :(

Other than that barely even the usual selection of seabirds turned up, though Guillemots lomvi were quite numerous at times:)

As is often the case and arrival of birds onboard coincided with an arrival of various small moths including this one.

To make matters worse all kinds of goodies turned up back home in Øygarden  - spectacularly a Yellowthroat nordgulstrupe - a first for Norway!! Also Hoopoe hærfugl and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Even offshore colleagues were posting pictures of Long-eared Owls hornugle so despite the great crew and fantastic food I wasn't the happiest of sailors....

Øygarden 14 -18 October 2022 - Trying to save the autumn

Unfortunately it was not possible to get out as much as I would have liked (or even much for that matter).

Grey Wagtails vintererle continued to show "all over" and it was the same for the Parrot Crossbills furukorsnebb that are currently probably the commonest crossbill in the area. At home Bramblings bjørkefink were ever present in the garden along with the usual suspects and the male Long-tailed Duck havelle remained on the unusual fresh water location at Tjeldstø.

On 15 October I spent a couple of hectic hours seawatching at Skogsøy. Other than a couple of Great Northern Diver islom, a flock of Barnacle Geese hvitkinngås and a fly over Snow Bunting snøspurv there was nothing terribly special but the passage was constant and there was a good gull migrations - with hundreds passing south - mostly Common Gull fskemåke and Herring Gull gråmåke but also 50 Lesser Black-backed Gulls sildemåke and several Black-headed Gulls hettemåke. A decent passage of auks, Red-throated Diver smålom, Common Scoter svartand and Long-tailed Duck havelle. A few flocks of waders passed too far off to identify but one flock of pale coloured waders with prominent wing bars got the pulse racing...

Good numbers of LBBG sildemåke heading south, mostly adults

Almost 50 Red-throated Diver smålom passed in the couple of hours I spent seawatching

A quick dash around a number of localities on 16 October produced a lovely Short-eared Owl jordugle at Breivik where a couple of Golden Plover heilo and a Dunlin myrsnipe also turned up. Decent flocks of Meadow Pipit heipiplerke still around too - 40+ were seen here. Flocks of Redwing rødvingetrost finally showing up all over the place after a slow start for this species this autumn.

I managed my usual round at Herdlevær on 17 October where migration over the sea was obviously in full swing - very much the same as at Skogsøy a couple of days previously. Purple Sandpiper fjæreplytt, a few flocks of Barnacle Geese hvitkinngås, Peregrine vandrefalk, Merlin dvergfalk and Golden Plover heilo were among the species seen here.

Plenty of birds about with Blackcaps munk turning up alongside thrushes and other species.

A fleeting visit to Solberg on 18 October produced barely even the usual suspects but a Merlin dvergfalk and a Barnacle Goose hvitkinngås flew over and a lone Purple Sandpiper fjæreplytt fed out on one of the skerries. Sæle gave several Blackcap munk, a Chiff-chaff gransanger and the usual.

Hernar 13 October 2022 - New Hernar ticks

An all too infrequent visit to Hernar produced two island ticks today in the form of a Treecreeper trekryper and Parrot Crossbills furukorsnebb.

Otherwise a pretty much normal autumn day with 50 species noted including the first Grey Wagtail vintererle and Goldfinch stillits of year for the island.

Other migrants included four Chiff-chaff gransanger, two of which looked rather like tristis to me (and I heard the "chicken" call from one of them), a few Blackcap munk, Snow Bunting snøspurv, Water Rail vannriskse and late Oystercatcher tjeld and Swallow låvesvale.

Øygarden 09 - 12 October 2022 - Barnacle geese

Little field activity again.

On 09 October I was mostly at home, a couple of Black-headed Gulls hettemåke flew past around dawn and the much commoner / regular White-tailed Eagles havørn showed well as usual. A very short walk at Herdlevær in the afternoon produced little other than a Chiff-chaff gransanger and a flock of 11 Wigeon brunnakke flying over.

One of at least three White-tailed Eagles havørn seen from the terrace.

My usual round at Herdlevær  0n 10 October (albeit with a shorter stop for seawatching) showed that a lot was passing. In the 15-20 minutes I sat there a flock of Barnacle Geese hvitkinngås flew south with a white bird among them. A Snow Bunting snøspurv also flew over.

A notable arrival of Redwing rødvingetrost started on the 10th. Up to a couple of hundred were seen at various localities.

On 11 October a male Long-tailed Duck havelle turned up on Husvatnet - not the usual place for this species.

Another short walk at Herdlevær on 12 October gave very little other than a flock of Wigeon brunnakke and a couple of Dunlin myrsnipe heading south.
