Tjeldstø and Solberg 12 September - Green Sand & Lap Bunting

Calm, warm and sunny.

Family commitments meant that I was tied up for much of the day but I spent a couple of hours out and about in the afternoon.

First up was Tjeldstø where the highlight was a Green Sandpiper skogsnipe that flew up WITHOUT CALLING - unusual for this species. A variety of the usual waders also put in an appearance along with a Greenshank gluttsnipe. Other birds of note here were a couple of Red-throated Diver smålom that flew over the reserve calling and a hunting Peregrine vandrefalk.

Lapland Longspur lappspurv - always hidden when on the deck. Here the bird was moving into position for an unobstructed shot when a passing car scared it off.

The best I managed today, an almost clear view.

Even out in the open it managed to put something in the way - in this case trees - something there are not a lot of at Solberg.

Solberg was the next stop where a Lapland Bunting / Longspur lappspurv was the best bird. Unlike most records of this species this was not a flyover bird but was feeding in a relatively small area. It proved almost impossible to photograph though as it was always hidden behind something, scared up by a passing car etc. For other pictures of this species in Øygarden (and elsewhere) check out this page.

There were quite a lot of passerines about at Solberg - among them a decent flock of Starling stær and the four commoner thrush species, a couple of Wheatear steinskvett and a Great spotted woodpecker flaggspett.

Back in August I predicted a Great Spotted Woodpecker flaggspett invasion this autumn and it looks like this may be starting as I have seen this species at various places where it does not normally occur the last few days - including one in my garden earlier in the day.

Skogsøy 29 March 2013 - Spring Migration

Calm and sunny yet again.

Considering the lengthy period of suitable migration weather today was pretty good - highlights were a Lapland Bunting lappspurv flying in off the sea, a few Shelduck gravand and the first migrating Puffins lunde of the year.

Cormorant storskarv

Common Scoter svartand and Eider ærfugl

Curlew storspove

Eider ærfugl

Oystercatcher tjeld

Shelduck gravand

Over 370 Oystercatcher tjeld headed north and the usual selection of early spring stuff were seen in smaller numbers.

Tjeldstø 13 October 2012

Light easterly and sunny again.

The Buff-bellied Pipit myrpiplerke remains and was seen by at least two new birders today.

A short stroll in the reserve produced a flock of seven adult Whooper Swans sangsvane - the first of the autumn. Other birds included a Lapland Bunting lappspurv and a probable Great Snipe dobbeltbekkasin.

Also of interest was a Ring Ousel ringtrost that turned up in the garden.

Dipper fossekall - a migrant bird

Late news from yesterday included more new for the year in Øygarden - a Dipper fossekall I found at Hjelme Vest, a Bullfinch dompap at Sture and a Yellowhammer gulspurv at Tjeldstø.

Øygarden 02 May 2012 - Missing stuff....

Fresh northerly winds but sunny.

The last few days have been good with more diver migrations past Skogsøy, another Crane trane, Golden Eagle kongeørn, the first Arctic Skuas tyvjo and Whimbrel småspove etc etc.

Above and below:  Lapland Longspur lappspurv at Breivik

 Pinkfoot kortnebbgås at Tjeldstø

Rook kornkråke at Skogsøy

Still really struggling to get out and about but managed a quick dash round a few localities today - good birds present at all stops!

At Solberg a second year Great Northern Diver islom headed north and a Peregrine vandrefalk flew past.

Husvatnet at Tjeldstø produced a lone Pinkfoot kortnebbgås.

A drive by at Herdlevær/Skogsøy connected with the Rook kornkråke that has been hanging around there since 29.04.

At Breivik a cracking male Lapland Longspur lappspurv gave excellent views.

Herdlevær 24 March 2012 - End of the "bombehagen"?

Even better weather than yesterday. Cloudless, sunny skies and a very light northerly breeze.

The day started off even better than anticipated with the first rarity of the spring - a Black Redstart svartrødstjert. It looked more like a female than an adult male but sang repeatedly - not sure whats going on there.

A fly over Lapland Longspur lappspurv which called repeatedly was rather earlier than usual and would appear to be the first March record for Øygarden! Other migrants included a small flock of Meadow Pipits heipiplerke, Golden Plover heilo, Skylark sanglerke and the first Reed Bunting sivspurv of the year.

A very brief look at the sea showed that although there was some migration (Oystercatcher tjeld, Common Gull fiskemåke and Red-throated Diver smålom) the passage was much reduced compared to yesterday.

This Black Redstart svartrødstjert was obviously having a good day at Herdlevær - so much so that it sang repeatedly.

On the way back to the car I found the best rarity garden in Øygarden (and probably the county of Hordaland) in a rather different state than usual. The trees are being heavily cut back and / or removed and another house will be built there. This is surely the end of this gardens magical rarity pulling power. This garden has had Isabelline Shrike rødhalevarsler, Blyth's Reed Warbler busksanger and much, much more besides - perhaps the old "bombehagen" at Herdlevær will take over the title of best rarity garden in Øygarden?

Beginning of the end for the best rarity garden in Øygarden?

We can but hope that the new house also gets a productive garden.....but this will no doubt take at least a few years.

Tjeldstø 12 September 2011 - Lap Bunting

Strong southerly winds and heavy rain.

Highlights today were a Black-throated diver storlom flying over the reserve and at least one Lapland Longspur lappspurv - the first of the autumn.

At least 45 Golden Plover heilo, 12+ Snipe enkeltbekkasin, some small flocks of Wigeon brunnakke and Teal krikkand and a White-tailed Eagle havørn were among the other birds seen.

Øygarden 29 April 2011

Trying out the new camera - Greylag grågås in flight

Calm, sunny and very warm.
A quick check at a few localities produced some sightings of interest:

The first Common Sandpipers strandsnipe for Øygarden this year at Hjelme.

At Hjelme Vest a Black Guillemot teist was the first I've seen for a while, small numbers of Long-tailed Duck havelle remain and a White-billed Diver gulnebblom headed north.

At Tjeldstø a Lapland Bunting lappspurv flew over. Later in the day a party of six Black-tailed Godwit svarthalespove dropped in breifly but soon moved on again.

Skogsøy 20 October 2010

Bird of the day in an Øygarden context - one of three Treecreeper trekryper seen today
Sparrowhawks spurvehauk

Small part of a Fieldfare gråtrost flock

Waxwing sidensvans are everywhere at the moment

Dashed out for a short seawatch which was produced relatively few birds - highlights being two Great Northern Diver islom heading north. Small numbers of Long-tailed Duck havelle, Velvet Scoter sjøorre and Common Scoter svartand on the move.

It was the walk out that was the most productive with a few small flocks of Waxwing sidensvans, a few large flocks of Fieldfare gråtrost totalling approximately 1000 birds - several hundred of which were feeding and resting in the heather. Other notable sightings included my first Treecreeper trekryper in Øygarden this year, a Grey-headed Woodpecker gråspett, a Jay nøtteskrike, a Lapland Bunting lappspurv, several Bullfinch dompap and at least four Sparrowhawk spurvehauk. Also plenty of Brambling bjørkefink and Mealy Redpoll gråsisik about.

At Herdlevær good numbers of Great Tit kjøttmeis and Blue Tit blåmeis were passing through. A couple more Treecreepers trekryper, a Chiff-chaff gransanger and a Blackcap munk were also present here.

Back home whilst changing over to winter tyres a flock of 15 Waxwing sidensvans landed briefly in the garden and a Lapland Bunting lappspurv flew over.

Øygarden 10 September

Lapland Longspur lappspurv
Golden Plover heilo

A couple of hours out and about in the afternoon produced the first Lapland Longspur lappspurv of the autumn at Breivik and a Yellow Wagtail gulerle at Herdlevær.

At Tjeldstø there were over 30 Golden Plover heilo and a Kestrel tårnfalk.

Herdlevær 20 April 2010 - More lap buntings

Highlights were a couple of Lapland Longspur lappspurv that dropped in - something I've always suspected should happen as the vegetation out in the heaths to the north of the island resemble the Hardangervidda quite a bit.

All the other sightings of any note came as we were leaving - a Kestrel tårnfalk hunting over Skogsøy, a Shelduck gravand landing on the sea near Breivik and a Swallow låvesvale flying over.

Back at Tjeldstø a pair of Wigeon brunnakke were new in

Tjeldstø 19 April 2010 - Lapland Longspur

Lapland Longspur lappspurv

Rather springlike after some shock snowfall early in the morning.

Best bird was a Lapland Longspur lappspurv well on the way to acquiring breeding plumage.

Otherwise very much business as usual with geese congregating after eagle flyovers, Reed Bunting sivpsurv, Linnets tornirisk etc.

Hernar 30 September 2008 - Yellow-browed at last

Lapland Longspur lappspurv (click for larger picture)
Above and below record shots of Yellow-browed Warbler gulbrynsanger

Arctic Tern rødnebbterne - last one this year?

Spent another good day on Hernar - the highlight being a nice Yellow-browed Warbler gulbrynsanger. This is the second bird in Øygarden this autumn.
Other good birds included at least one Lapland Longspur lappspurv and a couple of fly over Grey Wagtails vintererle. Although migrants were thin on the ground there were still plenty of birds about with at least 90 Twite bergirisk, a fly over Grey Plover tundralo, an Arctic Tern rødnebbterne and 16 Swallows låvesvale.

A mystery bunting was the one that got away today....
