Øygarden 19 September 2014 - Another cracking day!!

Light south easterly winds, warm and sunny.

Another excellent day's birding. Kicked off with a very vocal Yellow-browed Warbler gulbrynsanger at Alvheim and then went back to Hernar.....

First stop was Lyngøy where there were a lot of Goldcrest fuglekonge in the few bushes on the island, a Chiff-chaff gransanger and a Willow Warbler løvsanger were also present so there were high hopes for Hernar....

Red-breasted Flycatcher dvergfluesnapper

Hernar was generally a lot quieter than yesterday - perhaps due to an overnight clear-out or perhaps because it was just later in the day. However it was quality not quantity today and the east end of the island produced two Red-breasted Flycatchers dvergfluesnapper which were very vocal. Initially infuriatingly difficult to take any decent pictures of they settled down nicely and with some patience allowed us to obtain some good pictures.

Still plenty of Twite bergirisk present on both Hernar and Lyngøy

Also present on Hernar were a Garden Warbler hagesanger and a few each of Blackcap munk and Chiff-chaff gransanger.

Three Shags toppskarv and a Cormorant storskarv

Two adult and one young White-tailed Eagle havørn

Common Seal steinkobbe

The boat ride home produced a Purple Sandpiper fjæreplytt and a Black Guillemot teist or two.

The Willow tit granmeis movement seems to have picked up the pace a bit with birds seen at a few localities today.

Hernar and Lyngøy 18 May 2013 - Øygarden strikes back

Calm, sunny and HOT.

SHORT-TOED LARK DVERGLERKE

After yesterday's sightings on Fedje, just north of Øygarden it was high time we scored with a rarity - and we did! We found the first SHORT-TOED LARK DVERGLERKE for Øygarden on Lyngøy. This represents approximately the 10th county record.

Also on Lyngøy were a Pied Wagtail svartryggerle, a Spotted Flycatcher gråfluesnapper and a Whinchat buskskvett.

Arctic Skua tyvjo

Male Whinchat buskskvett

Hernar was quite productive despite getting the late in the day. Noteworthy sightings here included a Redstart rødstjert, a Whinchat buskskvett, two Pied Flycatchers svarthvit fluesnapper, a Spotted Flycatcher gråfluesnapper and a Garden Warbler hagesanger. LOTS of Wheatear steinskvett and decent numbers of Twite bergirisk also on the island.

Above and below: Arctic Tern rødnebbterne with almost all black beak

The all dark beak made this bird worth a second look!

An aberrant Arctic Tern rødnebbterne got the pulse racing - the all dark bill made me think of something quite different for a while.

A Kestrel tårnfalk, Whimbrels småspove, House Martins taksvale and plenty of other migrants were also seen during the course of the day.

Hjelme Vest 13 December 2012

Light south-east and "mild".

Woodcock rugde are facing an ever harder time of it - hoping for a thaw SOON

With some almost-sun shining on it Lyngøy looked like the place to be today

Temperatures hovering around freezing but not thawing fast enough for the likes of the Woodcock rugde I found by following its tracks through the undergrowth. Tracks of what was probably another bird also found.

Best bird was a rather distant Red-necked Grebe gråstrupedykker but otherwise just the usual suspects on the sea. Raptors today were three White-tailed Eagle havørn, a Sparrowhawk spurvehauk and a Goshawk hønsehauk. A flock of 12 Crossbills korsnebb in the woods were probably Common Crossbill.

Back home a Waxwing sidensvans dropped into the garden briefly before I set off.

Lyngøy & Hernar 13 September 2008

Spotted Flycatcher gråfluesnapper
Curlew storspove
Whinchat buskskvett
Lyngøy

Exploring these two islands properly for the first time gave some very promising results. These islands are rather different from each other but both have very good potential.

Plenty of migrants about with best birds being a Common Redstart rødstjert, a late Sand Martin sandsvale and a Lesser Whitethroat møller on Hernar. Other migrants included a Tree Pipit trepiplerke and several each of Spotted Flycatcher gråfluesnapper and Whinchat buskskvett. A Great Spotted Woodpecker flaggspett, two Kestrel tårnfalk and a Merlin dvergfalk were also present on Hernar.
Plenty of Willow Warbler løvsanger, Twite bergirisk, Linnet tornirisk, small numbers of thrushes and plenty more besides....

Waders included Common Sandpiper strandsnipe, Curlew storspove and Knot polarsnipe.
